Location Scouting: Why Choose Frontier Park for your Photoshoot

Why Frontier Park is Perfect for You in Erie, PA.

Before we add the subjects, the styling, and the lighting, it helps to understand the physical space. Frontier Park is a sprawling, meticulously maintained arboretum right in the heart of Erie. With winding creeks, cascading willow trees, and wide-open green spaces, it offers an incredible natural foundation.

Location Logistics & Details

  • Address: 1501 W 6th St, Erie, PA 16505

  • Best Time to Shoot: Golden hour (the hour just before sunset) is spectacular here, particularly near the labyrinth and under the willow trees.

  • Parking & Accessibility: There is a dedicated parking lot near the LEAF Education Center, and the park is highly accessible with paved pathways throughout. However, the grass and creek banks are uneven.

  • The Event Calendar Warning: Frontier Park is incredibly active. Take it from me: I once showed up for a dinosaur themed family shoot only to discover three cross country meets, a tennis tournament, and a nature expo all happening simultaneously. Finding parking was an absolute nightmare. Always check the LEAF Event Calendar to ensure you aren't fighting a festival for background space!

Chris’ Insider Tip for Frontier Park.

Every photographer in Erie knows about the main bridge at Frontier Park. If you want a shot that feels a little more unique, head toward the southwest corner of the park near the labyrinth during late autumn. The way the late afternoon sun catches the ornamental grasses creates a glowing, textured background that completely isolates you from the busy city streets surrounding the park. When shooting these isolated portraits, I love utilizing a wide-open prime lens—like an 85mm or a 135mm—to completely melt away the background and make the subject pop against those golden grasses.
